Brit. /ˌpɛrɪˈkiːtɪəm/, U.S. /ˌpɛrəˈkidiəm/

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin perichaetium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin perichaetium (Linnaeus Genera Plantarum (ed. 5, 1754) 487) < ancient Greek περι- peri- prefix + χαίτη long hair, as of a mane, leaves, foliage, in modern use taken also in sense ‘bristle’ (see chaeta n.) + scientific Latin -ium (see -y suffix4).On the analogy of perianthium n. and pericarpium n.2, etc., the present word might be expected to mean ‘that which surrounds or encircles the hair or foliage’, but is instead employed to express the hair or foliage that surrounds.
