Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin peltatus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin peltatus (Linnaeus Philosophia Botanica (1751) 48; in 17th cent. in post-classical Latin designating various parts of plants shaped like a pelta or shield) < classical Latin pelta pelta n. + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare classical Latin peltātus equipped with a pelta (i.e. the shield). Compare slightly earlier peltated adj.
Botany and Zoology.
Of a leaf: having the petiole joined to the (often more or less circular) blade at or near the middle rather than at the margin. Of other structures: having a similar mode of attachment.
