单词 pelleter
释义

pelletern.1

Forms: Middle English peleter, Middle English peletere, Middle English pelleter, 1500s pellytour.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French peletier.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman peletier, peleter, pelleter, peliter, pellitir and Middle French peletier, pelletier (12th cent. in Old French; French pelletier ) < pel pell n.1 + -etier , extended form of -ier -ier suffix; compare -er suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin pelletarius , pellitarius , peltarius (11th cent.; from c1260 in British sources), Old Occitan peletier . Compare pelter n.1, peltier n.1Attested from the mid 13th cent. as a surname, although it is uncertain whether this should be interpreted as reflecting the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word. It is also possible that quots. 1332 and 1377 might show the Anglo-Norman rather than the Middle English word.
Obsolete.
A dealer in animal skins and hides.

N.E.D. (1904) also records a form Middle English pellatur.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French peletre.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French peletre, pelettre, pelestre (end of the 11th cent. in Old French), ultimately (with dissimilation) < classical Latin pyrethrum pyrethrum n. Compare Old Occitan, Occitan pelitre (first half of the 13th cent.), Catalan †pelitre (14th cent.), Spanish pelitre (1300; < Old Occitan or Old French), Italian pilatro (13th cent.). Compare pellitory n.2, pellitory n.1, and also parietary n.; plant names derived ultimately from classical Latin pyrethrum and from post-classical Latin parietaria apparently became confused early, with the result that the present word occurs denoting both plants. With sense 3 compare pellamountain n.
