Etymology: < French pentlandite (A. Dufrénoy Traité de minéralogie (1856) II. 549) < the name of Joseph Barclay Pentland (1797–1873), Irish traveller and naturalist, who discovered the mineral + -ite -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

A bronze-yellow sulphide of iron and nickel, (Fe,Ni)₉S₈, which crystallizes in the cubic system and is the principal ore of nickel.
