Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French perdrigon.
Etymology: < Middle French perdrigon, perdigoine (1538 as prune de perdrigonne ; 1597 as prune de perdigoine ; French perdrigon , also French regional (north-east.) patrigone ), alteration, after perdrix partridge n., of Old Occitan perdigo, perdigon young partridge (14th cent.); compare Occitan perdigona, perdigon perdrigon plum, piece of lead shot; the reason for the transferred use of the bird name is uncertain (it may arise from similarity of colour).
Now rare.
More fully perdrigon plum. Any of several varieties of plum with black, purple, or yellow skin. Frequently with distinguishing word.
