Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pelage.
Etymology: < French pelage (a1558 in Middle French; 1469 as pelaige in sense ‘an animal's hair considered in respect of its colour’) < Old French peil , poil hair (see pile n.5) + -age -age suffix. Compare pilage n., plumage n., peltage n.
