Etymology: < penta- comb. form + -ane suffix². Compare French pentane (dated 1874 in Robert Dict. Alphabétique et Analogique (1986)).The substance was originally named quintane by A. W. Hofmann (1866 in Proc. Royal Soc. 15 58: see quot. 1872). Compare quint- comb. form.

Chemistry.

Each of three saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes) with the formula C₅H₁₂, occurring naturally in petroleum, spec. (also n- pentane) the unbranched isomer, CH₃(CH₂)₃CH₃, a volatile liquid. Cf. isopentane n. at iso- comb. form 2b, neopentane n. at neo- comb. form 1d(b).
