Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: fax n.1, wax n.2
Etymology: < fax n.1 + wax n.2 Compare fix-fax n.1 The reason for the alteration shown by the initial consonant in the β forms is unclear.Compare Middle High German hārwahs sinew, tendon (German †Haarwachs ), although it is unclear whether the first element was originally Haar hair n. or a word for flax (compare Old High German haru, Middle High German har), and also (with a first element of unknown origin) Old High German waltowahso nerve, sinew, tendon (Middle High German waltewahse, waltewahs). Compare also Middle Dutch geel haar tendon, literally ‘yellow hair’.
Now English regional.
