Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pax regis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pax regis (frequently a1087–1461 in British sources) < classical Latin pāx peace (see peace n.) + rēgis , genitive of rēx king (see rex n.1 and adj.). Compare French paix du roi (1835, with reference to Britain). Compare Pax Dei n., pax ecclesiae n.
A state or declaration of peace overseen by a king. Cf. the king's (also queen's) peace at peace n. 1b.
