Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Panimaha.
Etymology: < French Panimaha (1687) < Illinois pa:nimaha (representing a modern phonemicization of what appears in the French sources as Panimaha ) < a Dhegiha Siouan language (compare e.g. Quapaw ppanimáha upstream Pawnee < ppani Pawnee + máha upstream). Compare Omaha n. and adj., Pawnee n.1 and adj.
Now historical and rare.
A member of the Skidi band of the Pawnee North American Indian people originally inhabiting the Loup River valley, Nebraska.
