Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pavidus.
Etymology: < classical Latin pavidus frightened, fearful < pavēre to be frightened (verb indicating state, corresponding to pavīre to beat, strike: see pave v.) + -idus -id suffix1. Compare French †pavide (1611 in Cotgrave), Italian pavido (1342).
Chiefly literary.
Fearful, timid.
