Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese Paulista.
Etymology: < Brazilian Portuguese Paulista inhabitant of the city or province of São Paulo (1554) < Paulo (in the name of the city of São Paulo ) + -ista -ist suffix. With sense a compare earlier Paulist n.2; it is uncertain whether this sense reflects Portuguese use, or arose through misapprehension of the Portuguese word.
(a) A person of mixed Portuguese and Brazilian Indian descent, esp. one who was among the explorers or settlers of the hinterlands of southern Brazil. Chiefly historical. (b) A native or inhabitant of the city or province of São Paulo in southern Brazil.
