Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. A borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French pâté ; pat n.1, -y suffix6.
Etymology: < French pâté (see pâté n.3) with substitution of -y suffix6 for the ending. Compare earlier pasty n. (and forms at that entry), petit pâté n. In sense 2 transferred to the typical filling of the pasty, probably influenced by association with pat n.1 In sense 3 perhaps a separate word, < pat n.1 + -y suffix6.Perhaps compare Older Scots patty loose, patty-low's, name of a culinary dish.
