Etymology: < Latin Atlās, -antem, < Greek Ἄτλας, -αντα; name of one of the older family of gods, who was supposed to hold up the pillars of the universe, and also of the mountain in Libya that was regarded as supporting the heavens. Hence the various figurative uses.

Etymology: < (ultimately) Arabic aṭlas ‘smooth, bare,’ thence ‘smooth silk cloth,’ < ṭalasa to rub smooth, delete. Compare in same sense Italian raso shaved, satin. Also in German atlas satin.
archaic or Obsolete.
A silk-satin manufactured in the East.
