Etymology: < the name of Antoine Baumé (1728–1804), French chemist and inventor, in 1768, of a hydrometer, of which the scale is uniformly graduated.
Used in the possessive, also attributively and elliptically, to denote the hydrometer scale introduced by Baumé.
