Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pedant n., -ize suffix.
Etymology: < pedant n. + -ize suffix, after French pédantiser, pédantizer (1594 in Middle French in sense ‘to play the schoolmaster’). Compare Italian pedanteggiare to be pedantic (1585). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pe·dăntəiz) /ˈpɛdəntaɪz/.
Now rare.
