Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin patria.
Etymology: < classical Latin patria native country, use as noun (probably short for patria terra native land) of feminine of patrius native, ancestral, relating to one's father < patr- , pater father (see pater n.2) + -ius , suffix forming adjectives. Compare Italian patria (end of the 13th cent.), Spanish patria (late 14th cent. or earlier), Catalan patria (a1413), Portuguese pátria (1426). Compare earlier patrie n.
A person's native country or homeland. Also in extended use: a spiritual homeland, heaven.
