Etymology: < the genitive of the surname Paterson (see note below) + curse n.The identity of the eponymous Paterson is not clear. Austral. National Dict. s.v. suggests Richard Eyre Patterson (1844–1918), grazier in New South Wales, from whose land the plant is said to have spread. Alternative suggestions include William Paterson (d. 1810), Australian botanist.

A European bugloss, Echium plantagineum, a blue-flowered plant which has become a serious pasture weed in much of southern and western Australia and in parts of New Zealand, but is also valued for emergency fodder and as a honeybee plant. Also called salvation Jane.

1904 in Agric. Gaz. New S. Wales (1905) 16 268 Mr. P. Hore, of Mugwee Estate, kept a number of sheep in a small paddock last spring that was covered with ‘Paterson's Curse’, and the sheep completely eat it out, and the sheep appeared to do well on it.
1922 G. M. Thomson Naturalisation of Animals & Plants in N.Z. iii. 445 It is a serious pest in some parts of Australia, where it is known as ‘Paterson's Curse’.
