Etymology: < German Periblem (J. Hanstein 1868, in Abhandl. der Naturwissensch. als Gratulationsschr. der Niederrhein. Ges. f. Natur- u. Heilkunde 119) < ancient Greek περίβλημα anything thrown or put round, as a garment, or a fortification < περι- peri- prefix + βλῆμα throw (see ballista n.), after περιβάλλειν to throw round, put on (as a covering).
