Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French patchouli.
Etymology: < French patchouli (1826), apparently < Deccan vernacular pacolī ; the first part of the word is probably ultimately < a Dravidian language (compare Tamil paccai fragrant plant, fragrance), but the origin of the terminal element is unknown. Compare patch-leaf n.
