Etymology: < oyster n. + plant n.1, so called in sense 1 on account of its appearance and in senses 2 and 3 on account of its taste (see below).
1. A tropical American plant widely grown as an ornamental or pot plant, Tradescantia spathacea (family Commelinaceae), which has persistent large bracts in the axils of its large leaves, partly concealing small white flowers and spherical fruits (suggesting an oyster in a half-open shell).
