单词 patagon
释义

Patagonn.

Brit. /ˈpatəɡ(ə)n/, U.S. /ˈpædəˌɡɑn/
Inflections: Plural Patagons, Patagones.
Forms: 1500s Patagudu, 1600s Pentagon (irregular), 1600s– Patagon, 1700s Patagoon, 1900s Patagón.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish patagón.
Etymology: < Spanish patagón inhabitant of Patagonia (1522 in a court record on Magellan's voyage) < Patagón, the name of a dog-headed monster in the Spanish romance Primaleón (1512), perhaps because the Patagonian people Magellan met in 1520 had dog-head battle masks or because of their physical size. Compare Italian patagone (a1525 in the chronicle of Magellan's voyage), Middle French, French patagon (1585).For an alternative explanation, compare:1871 G. C. Musters At Home w. Patagonians 162 Hide overshoes are worn besides, and the footprints thus made are really large enough to convey the idea of giants' feet, and partly explain the term ‘Patagon’, or large feet, applied to these Indians by the Spanish discoverers. Patagonia, the modern name of the region, derives from the ethnonym.
Now historical.
A member of a South American Indian people inhabiting a region in southern Argentina and Chile, and alleged by early European travellers to be the tallest known people. Cf. Patagonian n.
