The impregnation of wood successively with solutions of ferrous sulphate and calcium chloride (or certain other salts) under a partial vacuum, so as to harden and preserve it.Variants of the process were also in use: N.E.D. (1904) gives the salts as ‘calcium (or barium) sulphide followed by..calcium sulphate’.
