Etymology: < Anglo-Norman pecunier (1360–1 or earlier: see quot. below) and Middle French pécunier (French pécunier ; now rare) of or relating to money (1465), alteration (with suffix substitution: compare -ier -ier suffix 2) of Middle French pecuniaire (French pécuniaire ) consisting of money (1308 in Old French; 13th cent. in Old French as plural noun in sense ‘monetary possessions’ in an apparently isolated attestation) < classical Latin pecūniārius pecuniary adj.; compare -ar suffix2. In use as noun perhaps shortened < pecuniary n. Compare earlier pecunial adj.In phrase pain pecuniar (compare quots. 1423, 1530-1 at sense A.) after Anglo-Norman penance pecuniere (1360–1 or earlier) and Middle French peine pecuniaire (c1372–7 or earlier); compare:1360–1 in Statutes of Realm (1810) I. 366 Lestatut des laborers auncienement fait estoise en touz pointz, forspris la penance pecuniere.Compare also post-classical Latin pena pecuniaria (1224, c1236, 1400 in British sources).
