Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pectoriloquie.
Etymology: < French pectoriloquie (R. T. H. Laennec De l'auscultation médiate (1819) I. 18) < classical Latin pector- , pectus chest, breast (see pectus n.) + -i- -i- connective + -loquium < loquī to speak (see loquent adj.); compare -y suffix4. Compare earlier ventriloquy n., pectoriloquism n., pectoriloquous adj.
Medicine. Now rare (chiefly historical).
Transmission of the voice through the chest wall, heard with a stethoscope and indicating either a cavity or consolidation in the lung.
