Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pectoral adj., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < pectoral adj. (compare sense 4 s.v.) + -ist suffix.In quot. 1886 apparently referring to the followers of A. J. W. Neander (born D. Mendel; 1789–1850), German Protestant theologian and church historian, in allusion to his motto (see etymological note s.v. pectoral n. and adj.).
