Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pastourelle.
Etymology: < French pastourelle song of a troubadour or trouvère (c1170 as pasturele ), fourth figure in a quadrille (1832), medieval lyric whose theme is love for a shepherdess (see quot. 1851 at sense 2), feminine form corresponding to pastoureau pastorel n. Compare German Pastourelle bucolic poem or play (1702 or earlier; now historical). Compare pastoral n., pastorale n., pastorella n.
