1. Payment made immediately or up front; the system of doing business whereby payment is taken up front, as opposed to relying on credit. Chiefly as a modifier, esp. in paydown system. Cf. to pay down 1 at pay v.1 Phrasal verbs. Now rare.In early use as two words; later usually hyphenated.

1785 Vermont Jrnl. 11 Jan. Any persons wanting Lime,..may apply to him, and he will endeavour to accommodate them in the best manner, for pay down.
1796 Vermont Gaz. 10 Feb. If pay down was as universally practised as charging on book, business would be much brisker than it now is.

1975 Business Lawyer July 1156 Both the debtor and its creditors usually will prefer to work out their problems by themselves—the bank may make an advance not justified by the loan agreement formula, or it may postpone a required paydown.
