单词 payable
释义

payableadj.

Brit. /ˈpeɪəbl/, U.S. /ˈpeɪəb(ə)l/
Forms: see pay v.1 and -able suffix; also 1500s paiabill, 1500s–1600s paiable.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pay v.1, -able suffix.
Etymology: < pay v.1 + -able suffix, after Anglo-Norman paiable due to be paid (1390–1412 or earlier) and Middle French, French payable worth the price (1255 in Old French as paiavle), able to pay (13th cent.), due to be paid (1421–30). Compare post-classical Latin pacabilis (also pagabilis) payable (1225, c1350–75 in British sources), marketable (frequently from 1194 in British sources). Compare also Italian pagabile (a1446).Earlier currency is perhaps implied by the surname Symone Payable (1272–3), although it is unclear whether this is to be interpreted as reflecting the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word.
