Etymology: < classical Latin parastas square post, upright (Vitruvius) < ancient Greek παραστάς , usually in plural παραστάδες doorposts, gateposts, antae < παρασταδόν (adverb) standing beside < παρα- para- prefix¹ + στάδην (adverb) in standing posture < the stem of ἱστάναι to stand (see stand v.); compare παριστάναι to stand beside.

Architecture. Now rare.
