Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: para- prefix1, stannic adj.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + stannic adj., after scientific Latin parastannicus (in oxydum parastannicum , Berzelius 1830, in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. 19 328, in oxydum parastannicum ). In sense 2 after French parastannique (in acide parastannique: R. Engel 1897, in Comptes Rendus 125 466).
Chemistry. Now rare.
1. parastannic acid n. (a) (Berzelius's name for) a calcined form of stannic oxide, differing from the ordinary form (now historical); (b) an acid of tin( iv) having the formula H2Sn5O11 (with varying amounts of water of crystallization).

1857 R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1860) Parastannicus, applied by Berzelius to the calcined stannic oxide, which, though having the same composition as the ordinary stannic oxide, differs from it in a special manner with respect to its properties; he therefore termed the former parastannic acid: parastannic.
1899 Jrnl. Physical Chem. 3 118 This new acid is called parastannic acid by the author.
1922 Jrnl. Physical Chem. 26 657 Engel..also recognizes a parastannic acid H2Sn5O11.7H2O when dried in air and H2Sn5O11.2H2O when dried in vacuum.
1927 J. W. Mellor Comprehensive Treat. Inorg. & Theoret. Chem. VII. xlvi. 443 Parastannic acid is insoluble in hydrochloric acid.
2. parastannic oxide n. historical = parastannic acid n. at sense 1.
