Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: para- prefix1, insomnia n.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + -somnia (in insomnia n.), after French parasomnie (1905 or earlier). Compare hypersomnia n. at hyper- prefix 4.
Medicine.
Any disorder characterized by abnormal or unusual behaviour (or other abnormal activity) of the nervous system during sleep; (as a mass noun) sleep disorder of this nature.
