Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: para- prefix1, Greek ἀψίς, ἁψίς.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + ancient Greek (Ionic) ἀψίς, (Attic) ἁψίς, in sense ‘circle, arch, vault’ (see apsis n.). Compare French parapside (1868 in Littré).
Entomology.
A lateral region of the mesoscutum of certain hymenopteran insects, delineated medially by grooves or lines. Usually in plural.

Etymology: < scientific Latin parapsis (see quot. 1817) < para- para- prefix1 + ancient Greek ἅψις touch < ἅπτειν to fasten, ἅπτεσθαι to touch (see haptic adj.) + -σις -sis suffix.
Medicine. rare.
Abnormality of the sense of touch.
