Etymology: < Byzantine Greek παραϕραστής (in Jerome (4th cent.) as a Greek word; in Greek authors from the 5th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek παραϕράζειν to paraphrase ( < ancient Greek παρα- para- prefix1 + ϕράζειν to explain, make known: see phrase n.) + -της , suffix forming agent nouns. Compare Middle French, French paraphraste (1542). Compare slightly earlier paraphraser n.
