Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French passement.
Etymology: < Middle French passement (1538 or earlier; c1195 in Old French in sense ‘action of passing’; French passement ) < passer pass v. + -ment -ment suffix. Compare Italian passamano (1516), Spanish pasamano (1537), both early borrowings from Middle French. The β. forms probably partly reflect the French pronunciation without final -t , although several examples are apparently after the Italian or Spanish. Forms in -rs- probably represent reverse spellings after the early assimilatory loss of r before s (see E. J. Dobson Eng. Pronunc. 1500–1700 (ed. 2, 1968) II. §401(c)), perhaps further influenced by forms of parchment n.
