Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paronomasia.
Etymology: < classical Latin paronomasia play upon words which sound alike < Hellenistic Greek παρονομασία < ancient Greek παρα- para- prefix1 + ὀνομασία naming (see onomasiology n.), after Hellenistic Greek παρονομάζειν to alter slightly in naming. Compare Middle French, French paronomasie (1546), French paronomase (1701).For earlier use of the Latin word in an English context compare:OE Byrhtferð Enchiridion (Ashm.)
