Etymology: < to pass over at pass v. Phrasal verbs 1. In sense 1 after Hebrew pesaḥ Pesach n. < pāsaḥ to pass or spring over (see pasch n.). Compare earlier passing over n. at passing n. Phrases 2a.The festival is named after the Lord's ‘passing over’ the houses of the People of Israel, whose doorposts were marked with the blood of a lamb, while the Egyptians were punished with the death of their firstborn (Exodus 11–12).
