Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pansophia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pansophia universal knowledge (1639 in Prodromus Pansophiæ, the title of a work by J. A. Comenius) < ancient Greek πάνσοϕος clever in every way ( < παν- pan- comb. form + σοϕός wise: see sophist n.) + post-classical Latin -ia -y suffix3. Compare French pansophie (1625 in an isolated attestation, subsequently 1800).
Now chiefly historical.
Universal or encyclopedic knowledge; a scheme, work, or programme attempting to embrace the whole body of human knowledge. Also: belief in or advocacy of such a scheme.Chiefly with reference or allusion to Comenius's scheme for creating a universal encyclopaedia of human knowledge.
