Origin: A borrowing from Turkish. Etymon: Ottoman Turkish rāyā.
Etymology: < colloquial Ottoman Turkish rāyā < raʿāyā , plural of Arabic raʿīya non-Muslim tax-paying subjects of the Ottoman Empire, specific use of raʿīya herd, flock < raʿā to pasture, feed. Compare French raïa , raja (1765). Compare raiyat n.
Now historical.
A subject of the Ottoman Empire (esp. a non-Muslim) who is not a member of the ruling class, and is therefore liable to pay a poll tax (see kharaj n.).
