Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of Pan n.3 + pipe n.1 In β. forms < Pan n.3 + pipe n.1In ancient Greek and Roman literature and art the instrument is frequently played by Pan, although its invention is attributed to Hermes. Some earlier uses with specific reference to the instrument played by Pan come close to a generic use, e.g.:1607 T. Walkington Optick Glasse sig. L5v They that neuer haue beene rauished with the sense-bereauing melody of Apollo, imagine Pans pipe to be surpassing musick.
In singular and (now usually) plural. A simple wind instrument made from a series of short pipes (originally reeds) graduated in length so as to form a scale, and fixed together with their mouth ends in line; a syrinx.
