Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a German lexical item, and perhaps partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: meta- prefix, -mer comb. form2.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + -mer comb. form2; in sense 1 either after French métamère (1831 in this sense) or German Metamer (1861 in this sense), or independently after metameric adj.1; in sense 2 after German metamer, adjective (W. Ostwald Farbkunde (1923) II. i. xvii. 174). Compare earlier metameride n., and also isomer n. and polymer n.
1. Chemistry. A metameric compound; an isomer, spec. one differing in one or more functional groups. Cf. earlier metameride n. Now rare.
