Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French palme d'or.
Etymology: < French palme d'or, literally ‘golden palm’ (1955) < palme palm n.1 + d' de prep. + or gold (see or n.1).
An award given annually to the film judged as the best shown at the Cannes Film Festival.A similar award is also given to the best short film.Prior to 1955, the award was named ‘Grand Prix du Festival International du Film’.
