Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: oto- comb. form, sclerosis n.
Etymology: < oto- comb. form + sclerosis n., after German Otosclerose (A. Politzer Lehrb. der Ohrenheilkunde (ed. 4, 1901) 263; now Otosklerose). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) also gives a pronunciation of (-sklīərōu·sis), /-skliːəˈrəʊsɪs/ for the second element.
Pathology.
A disorder characterized by abnormal growth of bone in the middle ear, frequently causing hearing impairment, esp. by immobilization of the stapes.
