Etymology: < classical Latin palmāris relating to victory, deserving the prize, measuring a palm's width < palma palm n.1, palm n.2 + -āris -ar suffix1. In sense B. 1 after palmaria n. Compare French palmaire , noun (1562 in Middle French in sense B. 2), adjective (1611 in Cotgrave in sense A. 2). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pæ·lmăɹ) /ˈpælmə(r)/.
