Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew pannag.
Etymology: < Hebrew pannag. Perhaps connected with Akkadian pannigu cake.The word occurs only in Ezekiel 27:17 and was traditionally rendered as balsam or balm following the Vulgate; it has also been interpreted as a place name. Most modern versions use millet or meal, or omit the word.
Perhaps: millet; a kind of cake or bread made with millet.Chiefly in biblical contexts, esp. in reference to or with allusion to Ezekiel 27:17.The substance referred to in this passage has also more recently been identified by some as ginseng; cf. panax n.
