Etymology: < Japanese shuri-ken, lit. ‘dagger in the hand’, < shu hand + ri inside + ken sword, blade. The traditional Japanese meaning is ‘a small dagger thrown with its blade pointing forwards as it flies through the air’.
In the martial arts (esp. ninjutsu): a weapon in the form of a small star with a number of projecting blades or points, thrown with a spinning motion at the target.
