单词 acaroid
释义

acaroidn.1

Brit. /ˈakərɔɪd/, U.S. /ˈækəˌrɔɪd/
Forms:

α. 1800s– acaroid, 1900s– accaroid, 1900s– accroid (rare).

β. 1800s– accroides, 1800s– acroides.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Acaroides.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Acaroides in Acaroides resinifera (C. Kite 1790, in Mem. Med. Soc. 4 (1795) 24), also Acoroides resinifera ( C. Kite Ess. & Observ., Physiol. & Med., on Submersion of Animals (1795) 138), former name of Xanthorrhoea resinosa, the tree from which the resin was first obtained; of uncertain origin, perhaps < Acorus acorus n. + -oides -oid suffix, in which case the tree is so called on account of some similarities between the two plants (e.g., both plants are grass-like and have similar leaves). The β. forms retain the Latin ending, but show loss of the medial -a-. An early description of the resin is in A. Phillip Voy. Botany Bay (1789) vii. 59ff, but it is there referred to only as yellow gum.
A resinous gum obtained from various Australian trees of the genus Xanthorrhoea (family Xanthorrhoeaceae), used (esp. formerly) for preparing varnish, lacquers and waxes, for staining wood, and in medicinal preparations. Frequently attributive, as acaroid gum, acaroid resin, etc. Cf. gum accroides n. at gum n.2 3a.Acaroid resins differ in colour depending on the species of tree they come from: X. resinosa produces yellow resin, X. preissii and others produce red resin.
