Origin: A borrowing from Hawaiian. Etymon: Hawaiian paniolo.
Etymology: < Hawaiian paniolo cowboy, Spaniard < Spanish español Spaniard (see Spainol n.).Attested in English contexts as a Hawaiian word from the 19th cent. (in quot. 1875 in the Spanish feminine form), and as an assimilated English word from the mid 20th cent.1875 I. L. Bird Hawaiian Archipel. xxiii. 326 When my native came up, he pointed to me and again said ‘paniola’; and afterwards we were joined by two women,to whom my guide spoke of me as paniola.1892 Papers Hawaiian Hist. Soc. 1 10 Californian and Mexican vaqueros or cowboys were employed to manage the ranches; hence the native name Paniolo, a corruption of Espagnol.1892 Papers Hawaiian Hist. Soc. 2 26 He [sc. the Mexican Hispano-Indian] was called generally ‘Paniolo’ or ‘Espagnol’, the word that now-a-days means ‘cowboy’.1938 R. S. Kuykendall Hawaiian Kingdom 1778–1854 xvi. 318 It is, therefore, safe to conclude that the Spanish or Mexican cowboys—paniolos, as the Hawaiians called them—who gave such romantic interest to the history of Waimewa, were brought to the islands not later than 1830.
