Etymology: < Old French dissenterie (13th cent. dissintere ), < Latin dysenteria (Pliny, etc.), < Greek δυσεντερία , < δυσέντερος afflicted in the bowels, < δυσ- (dys- prefix) + ἔντερα bowels.
a. A disease characterized by inflammation of the mucous membrane and glands of the large intestine, accompanied with griping pains, and mucous and bloody evacuations.
