Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French paillasse.
Etymology: < Middle French, French paillasse (c1250 in Old French as pailace ) < paille straw, chaff (see paly n.) + -asse , augmentative suffix (see molasse n.).The word appears only in Scots sources before the 18th cent. N.E.D. (1904) also gives the pronunciation (pælyæ·s) /palˈjas/.
A mattress made of sacking or other strong material filled with straw or the like.
